The most uncomfortable topic of all
The Daily Texan has bravely put a victim-sympathetic story about campus sexual assault on page one. Good for them and I hope they don't have too many nasty letters about women who "whine" about being raped.
The vast majority of sexual assault cases go unreported, a fact that this article really brings home by interviewing a professor on campus who collects anonymous stories from survivors. We as a society bear the collective blame for this problem--we make being a victim a shameful thing. If a friend tells me he's mugged, I want to hear the story. But a woman who confesses being a victim of sexual assault, we turn our eyes away. This, more than anything, makes survivors want to sweep it under the carpet.
